Here is a video that has 3 contextual messages that I think are rather cool (see my prior post for how this video came about):
1. Some execs are so 2.0 savvy, ... they "so get" the concept of transparent, human (vs. "corporate") sharing, and the value of modern communication tools (vs., say, email) that they THEMSELVES are able to take on the role of " TV-ready Conversationalist/Host" to the world. In the case of this clip, you see two such execs, a CMO and an HRO. The boomer-HRO is the "TV host!"
2. The message about a B2B company's size as an asset -- and the power of a focused message. In EMC's case, it wasn't too long ago that we were small ... and we're still small when it comes to comparisons against the likes of an IBM. BUT, we are so MUCH larger than many of our competitors ... competitors who would die for an opportunity to have a customer event of this scale. Listen to EMC's new CMO discussing this concept of "Big" and having a "Focused" message.
3. Listen to Jack's last question. It is something like, "How do we stay relevant to our customers?" Did you get the nuance there? That is an HR GUY being grounded with being RELEVANT with CUSTOMERS. Ahhh, how many FORTUNE 500 company G&A execs do you know who walk and talk the customer perspective? THAT is a cultural fabric element. It isn't taught. It is lived every day.
Why Don't You Do the Interview?
In this video, Jack Mollen, EVP of HR, took the ball and ran with it when I grabbed my flipcam and said, "Jack, why don't you interview Jeremy?"
"Okay," Jack said (with a wide smile).
Jeremy asked, "What's the subject?"
I said, "How about 'being big.'" "
That all took place in about 3 seconds. I hit the red button and signaled, "GO" with a finger point to Jack.
-------------- Talk Back ------------------
At my company, we're far along in this journey toward the "open" 2.0 type culture, but there is still a far way to go. Many employees I saw over these past few days suggested it might be time for a road trip of sorts of share the wisdom at an even more up-close-and-personal level; and share the examples to those who haven't witnessed the first-hand role modeling of 2.0 behavior and management styles.
Fair points. Good goal. Sign me (and you? and you?) up!
At EMCWorld this week, the theme is "Journey to the Private Cloud." Journey. Powerful word.
Where are you on your journey? What are you doing to help it along? Can you apply any of Jeremy's marketing tactics? Keeping the message focused, for example?
What about the "personal" tactics? Are you face-to-face with (even more) people throughout your organization, understanding what they're working to achieve, and outlining how this new model could help?
Does your company know clearly what you are working to achieve ... and what is in it for the audience with which they are conversing?
